My Rating – 4 out of 5
Plot Summary – Wrath of Man
Guy Ritchie, the ‘Guy’ who made the landmark ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels‘ – a landmark film that likely made Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese proud! British Gangsta noir, a la Coppola…. I’ve been a fan since then and though none of the later ones went on to achieve those gritty heights, they have all been different and very watchable. Also, Wrath of Man happens to be the 4th instance when Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie have worked together. After Lock, Stock…, came Snatch, then Revolver and now the fourth.
Statham is ‘H‘ for Hill when he walks in for an interview with a cash moving business as a guard cum driver. He makes the cut and just about passes the tests required to qualify as an armed guard. He doesn’t talk much, even when his co-workers try to rile him up. He passes the initiation test, when he saves the life of the driver, during a robbery and also keeps the money safe. His legend grows within the organization within a short time and soon he’s the go-to guy for frisky movements of cash. Fortico Security can hardly believe their luck with their new joinee…
But, there is a big but here, H is no ordinary Driver or Guard, he’s a man on a mission. He’s after the guys who murdered his son in broad daylight – a needless casualty of a Cash truck robbery. He heads some shadowy organization – the functioning of which is not very clear – except to do H’s bidding in kidnap and torture to extract information. They are sure of the presence of an inside man in Fortico’s operation, and H is after that man or woman and the gang he /she is leaking information to.
Though all the information extraction from the underworld of Los Angeles, essentially leads nowhere, as none of the gangs into Cash Truck robberies have the wherewithal to commit cold blooded murders and are more into gun toting, threatening and escaping with the money. But H is relentless, and Jason Statham really comes into his own now – with his quiet but menacing looks and intense periods of silence which says more than words could. As the movie slowly builds towards the climax – and what a roaring one it is – you are on the edge of your seat, egging on Statham!
Conclusion – Movie Review of Wrath Of Man
There are attempts to divert suspicion onto characters in Fortico as to who could be the mole, but veterans of watching this genre will be able to guess that soon enough. It’s definitely not Guy Ritchie’s best but it’s still one hell of a movie, and I think he does bring out the best of Jason Statham. Unlike Lock, Stock and Snatch, there’s not much of dark or gallows humor in this as the tone is set by the seriousness of the opening scene. As I said earlier, Jason Statham is at his intense best, though there isn’t much of his martial arts prowess on display here, it’s gun play all the way.
It’s a rollicking fun watch from start to finish, particularly for fans of the action-revenge thriller genre and the pair do it more than justice. In this year full of depressing news, this will take your mind off a lot, so go for it, people!
