In this legal thriller, a high-profile celebrity attorney, Jane Smith, is preparing for the retrial of Rob Jacobson, her celebrity client, accused of murdering six people. He’s been acquitted once of the crime, but he’s now been sued in the next county as new evidence has come to light. Jane, herself, is not sure whether Rob is innocent of the crimes he’s accused of and his behavior, while no bail is of no great assurance. Though he claims innocence and says he’s been framed, his demeanor says he’s too cocky and is overconfident that Jane can get him exonerated.
Jane has her own battles outside this trial to grapple with, what with her terminal diagnosis weighing heavily on her mind. But her trial battle is not just against the public prosecutor, the overwhelming proof, or even her mounting doubts over her clients’ innocence. Other people want her to fail, and they will stop at nothing to ensure that. Her investigator in her law practice – Jimmy Cunniff – is also her best friend (a true mate in the platonic sense) is also of the opinion that this case is not worth fighting for, Rob is guilty, so Jane should just let it go.
But Jane ‘effing’ Smith is not one to do so; she will fight her last fight, come what may! And her present boyfriend, the veterinarian, Dr. Ben Kalinsky, is also standing steadfastly beside her, supporting her through thick and thin. Though Rob, the accused, pretends that he’s confident that Jane will get him acquitted again, Jane herself sometimes wonders if Rob really is innocent or is this all a show. As the trial begins, Jane realizes that the prosecution has a solid case – with the new proofs that have come to light – and she will have to do her best to discredit that.
At the same time that she is dealing with her illness, she and Jimmy both keep getting threats to their lives, most likely from the gangster Sonny Blum. Why would a gangster want to protect a murderer but also threaten his lawyer, who is his best chance to win an acquittal? Things get more and more layered and complicated as the trial begins.
