The Rip – Movie Review – A Star-Studded Non-Stop Action Flick on Netflix To Spice Up Your Weekend

My Rating – 3.8 out of 5

Introduction

The crime-drama genre rarely surprises audiences anymore—most films follow familiar beats of investigation, betrayal, and confrontation. Yet The Rip arrives with a different emotional weight. Rather than relying only on action or procedural suspense, the film focuses on the human cost of loyalty, greed, and decisions made in moments of desperation. The result is a story that feels raw, tense, and deeply personal. The trump card here is Joe Carnahan’s direction and lead actors – Matt Damon and Ben Affleck‘s real-life chemistry spills onto the on-screen success.

Though this movie is classified as a crime action thriller, the focus is on corruption in police ranks, specifically in the Miami PD. Set within a tight circle of law-enforcement officers, two of whom are also close friends – though rank separates them, The Rip explores what happens when trust begins to crack. A routine discovery pulls a group of officers into a morally complicated situation, forcing them to question not only each other but also the lines they once believed they would never cross. Loyalties and friendships are questioned, and trust seems fragile. The line between good and bad is blurred.

The Plot – No Spoilers

The Rip opens with a Miami cop named Jackie (Lina Esco) being killed in cold blood by two masked goons. She got too close to the leader of a drug-related gang, but was it a criminal or one of her fellow cops? During the investigation into Jackie’s death, Jackie’s partners on the elite Miami PD task force, including Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon), Detective Sergeant JD Byrne (Ben Affleck), and others, are interrogated to find out who the leak is in the task force. Suspicion is cast on all of them, and it keeps jumping from one to the other, until none of them seems to be honest.

Lieutenant Dane is the head of this task force, with Detective Sergeant JD Byrne being his main sidekick and close friend. Byrne is the no-nonsense kind of guy who won’t hesitate to question his superiors or even the FBI agents who are also after the same drug gangs. These initial scenes are a bit of a deception, aimed at creating doubts in the minds of the viewer. The director wants you to constantly question which cop is dirty, who’s clean, or if everyone is somehow involved in the scam. Everyone seems to have a motive, and with large sums of money involved, nobody seems to be honest enough to rise above all suspicion.

Dane gets an anonymous tip that there’s a stash house belonging to a drug cartel that’s got a lot of money hidden away. The task force does exactly this: Go into these money storage locations and “rip” the illegal gains from the gangs or cartels. Rumors have been circulating that there are corrupt cops in the task force, and they have been keeping part of these rips for themselves. Dane and his task force end up at a house in an ordinary residential area. The mood is set in the area, which looks deserted, dark, and dimly lit. There’s something sinister in the air!

They arrive to find a young woman named Desi (Sasha Calle) who is living in the house of her dead grandmother. She doesn’t seem to be a part of any criminal activity, but is acting suspiciously when the cops question her. The money-sniffing dog has smelled something, and eventually leads them to a wall in the attic, which reveals a stash of money beyond their wildest imaginations! This discovery leads the cops to question Desi and find that, though she may not be directly involved, she was aware of the criminal activities going on in the house. Around this time, it seems the people who have kept that money have become aware of the raid.

Now, doubts surface amongst the task force members, and it seems some of them are keen to keep part of the stash to themselves, without informing the Police top brass. Accusations fly thick and fast, and the director manages to cast aspersions on all members, shifting convincingly from one to another. It is pertinent to mention here that Desi/Sasha Calle has put in a memorable performance here, not being overshadowed by the towering presences of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. As the house is attacked by unknown forces, the cops take cover and shoot back – not knowing whether the ones outside are cartel members or corrupt cops.

While the movie brilliantly moves through the frenetic pace of suspicion, guilt, and discovery, the two lead characters, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, bring gravitas and charisma to their roles. Matt is sharp, intense, but tired, and Ben is always on the edge, fidgety but keen to get to the bottom of it all and bring to book all dirty cops, even if that means exposing his best friend on the force. The Rip is expertly directed, switching between doubt and certainty with equal conviction until the finale, when the great expose rips the cover off hidden criminality amongst elite cops.

Conclusion

The pacing may feel deliberately slow at times, but this measured rhythm allows tension to accumulate naturally, leading to a climax that feels earned rather than forced. Visually, the film embraces a grounded, almost documentary-like realism. Dimly lit interiors, urban nightscapes, and tightly framed conversations reinforce the sense of claustrophobia surrounding the characters’ situation. The direction avoids flashy distractions and instead focuses on subtle emotional beats—glances, pauses, and uncomfortable silences that speak louder than dialogue.

Emotional Impact: Where the Film Truly Succeeds

What makes The Rip memorable is not just its crime-thriller premise but its emotional core. The film repeatedly asks a difficult question: How far would you go to protect your own people—and what happens when that loyalty becomes a burden? Would people with a heavy psychological burden be ripe for corruption and bent morality? Would bonds of friendship last the tests of integrity and honesty or would they blow apart at the first signs of tension and moral dilemmas? By the final act, viewers are left reflecting not only on the characters’ decisions but also on their own beliefs about trust, integrity, and consequence. Few crime dramas manage to leave such a lingering emotional aftertaste.

Final Verdict

The Rip is not a traditional action-heavy thriller. Instead, it is a slow-burn character drama wrapped inside a cop crime narrative—one that rewards patience with powerful performances, psychological tension, and meaningful emotional depth. While some audiences may expect faster pacing, those who appreciate character-focused storytelling will find the film compelling and thought-provoking.
A gripping, emotionally charged crime drama that proves the most dangerous conflicts are often the ones happening inside people, not just around them. Psychological stress does not always lead to a broken moral compass; sometimes it steels the resolve and invigorates the search for integrity.
