Night Always Comes Movie Official Trailer

Lynette (Vanessa Kirby) is a young woman who lives with her mother, Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and her autistic brother Kenny (Zack Gottsagen) in a run-down house which is about to be sold off. She needs to arrange $25,000 to keep off the loan sharks and the house. She is also massively behind on all her bills. Doreen has promised to give her the money so that they can keep the house. An upbeat and hopeful Lynette makes an appointment with the house owner, where she can make the down payment, finalize her mortgage, and own the house. She and Kenny are already planning the renovations they will make in their home.

Then on the big day, Doreen stands her up. Not saying why she can’t make it, she doesn’t turn up at the legal office, and Lynette has no other option but to beg for a 24-hour extension of the deadline. The owner reluctantly gives her that, with the caveat that he will not wait for one more minute after 9 am the next day. Thus begins Lynette’s night of adventure – where desperation meets enterprise and hope blends into despair in a matter of minutes. Having worked as an escort previously, Lynette hooks up with one of her old clients, hoping that he will fund her for the $25k, but he refuses flat out.

A desperate Lynette steals his car, only to run out of courage when it comes to selling it. She then turns to an old friend, who was a co-escort but has now found a sugar daddy to shack up with. She refuses to give any money to Lynette but rushes off on a date. A frantically desperate Lynette resorts to even more desperate measures in a last-minute attempt to somehow scrape together $25k. She steals a safe, tries to sell some drugs, and gets assaulted trying to put together the money. But will she be able to arrange the money? Will her house finally, and legally, be hers?

To know the answer to that, you will have to watch this haunting movie. For me, the two scenes that stood out, both for their poignancy in the context of the story, and also for the subtle acting skills of the actors involved. First, there is the scene where a fully dolled-up Lynette goes to meet her old client, Scott (Randall Park), and finds even more despair. Vanessa Kirby pulls no punches here in terms of her acting. She depicts the vulnerability, the hopelessness of her situation, just as much as she demonstrates the never-say-die attitude that it’s not over till it’s over!

The second scene is near the end when Lynette has a showdown with her mother, Doreen. Both her and Jennifer Jason Leigh put in powerful performances. Both women demonstrate why they are such reputed performers, and you cannot take your eyes off them. It’s not about heists and violence or crime, it’s so much more about humanity itself, that hope never dies. Even when the chips are down, and everything seems to grow darker still, there is always a glimmer of light, the ray of hope that keeps one alive and going. Touching performances by both ladies!
