The Old Guard 2 plot

The first movie was released in 2020, at a time when the entire world was grappling with the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, and it became a sort of sleeper hit. Amid the devastating news coming from around the world every day, a band of Immortals saving humanity seemed apt. Five years later, the band of Immortals, led by Andromache (Andy – Charlize Theron) is back to saving humanity again. Interesting, isn’t it? Humanity needs saving all the time, and guess what? From itself! No other species on Planet Earth is so keen on self-destruction, and proudly oblivious to the danger it poses to itself!!

This time, Andy and her team are up against one of their own. Discord – played by another powerhouse on-screen badass, Uma Thurman, of the Kill Bill fame, is hell-bent on destroying Andy and her immortals. She wants to keep all the power to herself and now has Quynh by her side. The once inseparable Andy and Quynh are now on opposite sides of the ring. Quynh is upset with Andy for deserting her, without knowing the context of Andy’s circumstances. Although her enemies are unaware that Andy has lost her immortality, the battle continues until the end.

The Main Cast of The Old Guard 2

Overall, the storyline is rather thin, but the action sequences are slick and near flawless. Set pieces are well planned and executed. Both Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman live up to their reputations with intense and focused performances. The rest of the cast also does adequately well within the confines of their role. However, the weakness of the plot is glaringly evident throughout and cannot be completely covered up by the smoothness of the production team and the top-notch performances of the cast. Chiwetel Ejiofor, for example, feels completely wasted and could have been utilized better.

Another grouse that I have is that the final fight scene between Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman takes place in a set that looks extremely artificial and made up. Had the same scene been shot in natural light, it would have looked far more authentic and real. Here, it looks unreal and CGI-enhanced, which, even if actually the case, could have been better executed. However, that is a minor grievance – the rest of the movie is slick, light on the plot line, and does announce (at the end) of a distinct possibility of a third installment. I honestly hope that it is better planned in all aspects than this.

In Conclusion – Movie Review of The Old Guard 2

The Old Guard 2 proves once again that Netflix knows how to deliver an action-packed sequel with heart, grit, and powerful performances. Charlize Theron leads an exceptional cast in a story that blends immortal warriors, emotional stakes, and breathtaking fight sequences. For fans of superhero sagas and action fantasy films, this sequel offers plenty to enjoy while leaving hints at future installments. Whether you’re streaming for the star power, the not-so-gripping storyline, or the jaw-dropping action, The Old Guard 2 is a must-watch for total action junkies (like me) but not so much for the purists of cinema.

The only other prayer to the bosses at Netflix is that please don’t delay the third installment to another five years, and make it more meaty in terms of the story than this one.
