One of the greatest adversaries of Alex Cross throughout a large part of this enduring series, has been Gary Soneji. The twisted, sick serial killer has featured in many of the earlier novels of the series until he was killed in a fire. This one starts with a grisly discovery that takes Alex Cross and his partner and friend, John Sampson, to their initial days in Washington Metro Police and their first encounter with the notorious Gary Soneji. It wasn’t then that they were aware of Gary’s identity, that came much later.
Ned Mahoney, Alex and John’s close friend and FBI Special Agent is at the site of those discoveries linking back to Gary Soneji. The story then goes back by about 20 years and becomes the origin story of a twisted serial killer who leads a duplicitous life. Living life as a traveling Salesman, Gary Soneji has a young family who suspect nothing about Gary’s dark and evil side. He plays the dutiful husband and father, who is away most of the week, performing his routine job. Little do they know, that this average man is actually scouting for his victims and planning on how to murder them to satiate his blood lust.
Then, he comes back to his family as if nothing has happened, and goes about life like a normal person. Meanwhile, the police are still searching for a killer who’s killed his first victim (though they don’t know it yet) and wounded two more, and has left no evidence leading to his identity. Alex Cross and John Sampson are assigned to the case as junior detectives, tagging after the two leads. The Police Chief who has brought them in hopes that Dr. Cross’s PhD in Criminal Psychology will give them an edge in solving crimes that plague America’s capital city.

As the rookie who’s entry into the battle-hardened team of elite detectives was resented, Alex has to walk on eggshells as there are some who’d love to see him fail. His initial ideas about the direction of the investigation is met with a lot of skepticism and disbelief. But he soldiers on till the team members start turning around and believing his point of view. Early days, but Alex is et to become the expert profiler later in his career, and the promise is already there. Also, this is the time in his personal life, when he’s married to Maria, an ER nurse.
His first born Damon is still a toddler and a second one is on the way. Nana Mama is still not the ninety something rock in Alex’s family, though she is still the formidable old lady whose life philosophies and actions hold this family together. It is in this backdrop, that the fledgling career of Dr. Alex Cross takes off and is et to become one of the most loved thriller series in the world. This also happens to be the origin story of his bête noire – Gary Soneji, and what goes on in his mind and the machinations of that depraved mind that leads him to become one of the most feared serial-killer in literary history.

The Mindset of Serial Killers
The mindset of serial killers is a complex, disturbing blend of psychological, social, and biological factors that drive repeated violent behavior—understanding this mindset is key for experts studying the psychology of serial killers, forensic profiling, and criminal behavior patterns. Many serial killers share converging traits: callousness, shallow affect, and a lack of empathy consistent with psychopathy or antisocial personality disorder, together with obsessive fantasies and a compulsive need for control or domination.
Childhood trauma, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and severe neglect, frequently appears as an early risk factor that distorts attachment, normalizes violence, and creates maladaptive coping mechanisms; adverse childhood experiences can interact with genetic predispositions and brain differences (e.g., impulse-control and empathy-related neural circuitry) to increase vulnerability. For some, an early fascination with death, cruelty to animals, or fire-setting—behavioral red flags noted in developmental histories—evolves into ritualized fantasies that escalate when unmet by real-world outlets, producing the “compulsion to kill” described in forensic literature.
Social isolation, rejection, and identity fractures can further radicalize these fantasies into action as perpetrators seek validation, power, or a sense of mastery over victims. Motivations vary—sexual sadism, thrill-seeking, mission-driven ideology, or profit-driven motives—and often combine with ritualistic behaviors that give perpetrators psychological reinforcement, making cessation difficult without external intervention. Protective and situational factors—strong social bonds, early mental health treatment, and stable environments—reduce risk, which is why prevention and early screening are essential.

Importantly, studying serial killers’ behavioral patterns, signature behaviors, and cooling-off periods helps criminal psychologists and law enforcement build profiles that prioritize prevention and capture while avoiding sensationalism. Responsible, evidence-based analysis emphasizes that while particular traits and triggers are common, there is no single “serial killer personality”; the urge to kill continuously usually arises from a unique convergence of trauma, mental health issues, neuro-biological factors, and reinforcing behaviors.
Clear public messaging, trauma-informed care, and improved access to mental health services are practical steps to reduce the risk factors associated with serial violent behavior and to protect potential victims and communities. Also, these serial killers are not born as such, they are mostly made – a combination of nature and nurture. Investigative agencies around the world work round the clock to prevent and solve crime, particularly of this gruesome nature and modern technology is making significant breakthroughs in this aspect.
