Weapons – Mrs. Gandy’s class on that day…

Ms. Justine Gandy is a new teacher for third-grade students in Maybrook Elementary School in the fictional town of Maybrook. But on this fateful day, she comes into her class, only to discover that her entire class is absent. Only one boy sits at the back, Alex Lilly, quiet and surly. Apparently, late in the night before, 17 children woke up, walked up to their main doors, opened them, and ran out. Never to be seen again. All Police and other searches came up blank. The devastated and baffled parents hounded the school and the authorities for answers, and none were forthcoming.

Slowly, the parents came around to asking questions of the school authorities and specifically of Ms. Gandy, why were no other students affected? Why only her class? Though there’s nothing linking Ms. Gandy to the students’ disappearance, and the cops also haven’t found a link, the parents have their doubts, and some of them get aggressive with her. Ms. Gandy is a diminutive do-gooder type of teacher who loves to take care of the children in her care, but here, that intention is looked upon with a lot of skepticism and doubt.

The story is told from the point of view of some of the protagonists of the movie – Ms. Gandy, Marcus, the school principal, Alex, etc., and what I loved about that is how these different narratives brought the story together. It’s like multiple cameras shooting a scene from different angles. Each one gives you a different perspective, and only when you have seen them all does it all seem explained in your mind. The suspense builds up with every frame, and questions that were raised at the beginning slowly start to unravel.

There is not much that the police can do, as whatever cameras have captured the children’s dramatic exodus, they all show them moving into the dark, into the woods, and into the darkness. They never come out of it. There is no commonality among the children or their parents. No stranger has come into the town who can be suspected, and no clues are found anywhere. Even the canines cannot trace the children. Ms. Gandy is hounded wherever she goes, and suspicious parents follow her around and threaten her with physical harm.

Without divulging further plot details, suffice it to say that the movie is a fine addition to the horror genre in the way that it is told. Though at times, it gets a little too gory. If one gets nitpicking, the reason behind all the mayhem is not well explained, but that possibly gets lost in the entertainment that a horror movie supplies.

All in all, it’s a movie well worth watching, particularly from the point of view of the performances from all the actors. Julia Garner as the unsure but resolute teacher, Ms. Gandy, is wonderful, and so is Josh Brolin as the father of one of the missing children. Cary Christopher, as Alex, fulfills the role of a troubled child with elan and earns the sympathy of the audience. Overall, a wholesome performance of the cast generously adds to the success of the movie.
