Plot Summary – The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It
The supernatural thriller series – The Conjuring is back with its third installment – this time, tellingly, titled The Devil Made Me Do It. This is based on a true story, one that was investigated by the real-life couple Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). Set in 1981, it revolves around the exorcism of a young boy, David Glatzel ( Julian Hilliard), who gets possessed by a demonic spirit. During the process, he passes it on to his sister – Debbie‘s (Sarah Catherine Hook) boyfriend Arne (Ruairi O’Connor), and Arne is now infected and a carrier of the spirit.
The powerful grip of this evil spirit is such that it makes Arne commit a horrible crime and Ed and Lorraine have to find a way to stop and destroy this evil. This edition of the Conjuring franchise is not half as entertaining as the earlier ones and besides all, the scares and chills are rather inadequate.
Arne Cheyenne Johnson: Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared. It means you are scared but you hang in there.
Arne in The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It
The staple props of the genre are all there, all doors close with a resounding thud and creak like mad, there are many spooky basements and old men leading down those basements. It is scary in parts, but the scenes which are expected to bring the ‘chills’ to the viewers turn out to be such damp squibs! Besides, the new characters, are not formed too well and Arne though besotted with Debbie, seems to have no family of his own at all.
Around the three-fourth stage of the story, Ed and Lorraine, come across a similar incident where an otherwise innocent girl murders her girlfriend, and then she vanishes. Ed and Lorraine decide that the cases are linked and if they can find any common factors between the incidents, which can lead them to the one who is possessing these people and making them commit these evil deeds. Apparently, this was the first time in the US that a murder accused pled guilty to the charges but cited ‘Demonic Possession’ as his defense.
Conclusion – Movie review of The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It
As mentioned earlier, this film about Exorcism and Possession could have been much better, though it must be said that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s chemistry thickens with every chapter of the series. The ominous background score adds nothing to the thrill value of the movie and in a few places, the story feels disjointed and kind of meanders away from the main storyline. Acting-wise, everybody does a fair job with Debbie’s boyfriend Arne being the best actor among the ones on show.
That being said, this is still quite a watchable movie, and if you stop comparing it to the older movies and watch it as a standalone, you may like it as well.
