My Rating – 4.8 out of 5
There is something strangely comforting about a man who travels with nothing but a folding toothbrush, an expired ATM card, and an uncanny inner clock that always tells him the exact time down to the minute. A man who is not just unique because of his imposing physical presence, but also because of his character. He cannot stay in one place for long, and he is not for lasting relationships, but his moral compass is unwavering. He will never back down from righting a wrong, using mostly unconventional means.
If you have been hanging around this blog for a while, you already know my obsession with action and espionage thrillers, but my relationship with Jack Reacher runs deep. My journey with Lee Child’s iconic creation didn’t actually start at the very beginning. Back in 2011, I randomly picked up 61 Hours—the 14th book in the series. I was completely hooked by the brutal South Dakota cold, the relentless tension, and that towering, silent vigilante who steps off a bus and into trouble. That single book blew me away so thoroughly that I immediately went back to the very start with Killing Floor.
From that day on, I devoured every single novel in order, eagerly awaiting each new release like clockwork. Reading Reacher has become an annual ritual for me, a comforting constant in an ever-changing reading landscape. So, when the latest installment arrived, my expectations were naturally set high. In my Chain Reaction book review today, I want to take a close look at how the 31st entry in this legendary saga holds up for long-time readers like us.
Co-authored by Lee and Andrew Child, Chain Reaction drops our favourite drifting ex-military policeman right into the middle of a high-stakes modern plot. The narrative kicks off with a dead covert operative, a lingering mystery involving a past acquaintance, and a trail that leads straight into the high-altitude isolation of rural Colorado. But this isn’t just another small-town brawl.
The story thrusts Reacher into a surprisingly contemporary collision course involving massive, solar-powered AI data centers hidden out in the desolate expanse—a far cry from the traditional small-town sheriff’s offices and diner counters we are used to seeing him dismantle.
As someone who has walked every mile alongside Reacher for over fifteen years, watching the series evolve under Andrew Child’s co-authorship has been an intriguing ride. Does this new entry deliver that pure, hard-hitting satisfaction we crave, or does the modern high-tech setting shift the classic formula too far? Let’s dive straight into this Chain Reaction review and unpack what works, what doesn’t, and whether this latest chapter earns its spot in the classic Reacher pantheon.
In my opinion, this is one of the best Reacher novels of recent times, especially since he began co-writing with his brother Andrew. This novel brings back the erstwhile Major Susan Turner, who, incidentally, was first mentioned in the 2010 novel 61 Hours, and then again played a central character in the 2013 novel, Never Go Back. She is now a Brigadier General, running an investigative subdivision of the US Army, something like an in-house FBI for the Army’s behemoth-sized operation.
Reacher said “So go ahead and call them, right now. Tell them the new guest is poking around. Meanwhile I’ll go get breakfast. Ninety-four minutes should be plenty of time to eat a meal in peace.”
“But one of them is already here.”
“One of them won’t be enough,” Reacher said.
One of the investigators from that division, G-99, sniffs out something hinky going on with a set of five AI Data Centers in rural Colorado and goes to check it out. But he is mysteriously found dead the next day, behind a shady bar. The local police rule it as a violent mugging gone wrong; he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. But his CO is not convinced, not sure how this could be explained as a coincidence or misfortune. A below-the-radar investigation is in order, and who better to conduct it but ex-Major Jack Reacher, no middle name.
When Reacher is contacted, he is sceptical at first, but then, as is his wont, he would agree to help, if only to find closure for the victim, his wife, and their 11-month-old daughter. When Reacher gets to Summertown, Colorado, and starts poking around, he realizes that this is no mugging. John Bisley, the cyber-crime specialist, was stabbed to death because he was close to unearthing what was going on in that remote outpost. Now there is no stopping Jack Reacher; he will only relent once he’s served justice to those who so cruelly snuffed out John Bisley’s life.
The novel delivers the familiar short, punchy dialogue and brutal action sequences, along with the soft, romantic interludes the Reacher novels are so well known for. Greedy corporations, unethical hackers, and brutal mercenaries all make up the support cast for this novel. After a very long time, Reacher fans can celebrate the reinvigoration of the much-loved character and everything we’ve ever loved about this long-running series.

The Verdict: Does the Fuse Still Burn Bright?
When you’ve spent over a decade following a character through thirty-one novels, picking up a new release always comes with a mix of eager anticipation and a quiet, protective anxiety. You want the sharp, clinical punch of Reacher’s deduction. You want the satisfying crunch of bones when a group of overconfident thugs makes the fatal mistake of cornering a big man in a dark alley. Most of all, you want that unmistakable feeling of an unyielding moral force moving through a flawed world.
Chain Reaction delivers plenty of those classic beats, but it also isn’t afraid to force Reacher out of his traditional comfort zone. Throwing an off-the-grid drift-walker into the shadow of ultra-modern, heavily guarded AI data centers in rural Colorado creates a fascinating friction. It pits old-school physical survival and sharp instincts against modern surveillance, high-tech corporate power, and invisible threats. And having Brigadier General Susan Turner back in the fold adds a compelling layer of history and dynamic tension that long-time fans will thoroughly appreciate.
While the co-authored era continues to tweak the pacing and structure of the series, the heart of the Reacher experience remains intact: a relentless mystery, escalating stakes, and a protagonist who never backs down when innocent people are caught in the crosshairs. If you’ve been on this journey since Killing Floor—or even if you jumped on board somewhere in the middle like I did back in 2011 with 61 Hours—Chain Reaction is a ride worth taking. It will leave you turning pages late into the night, guessing how Reacher will outsmart a system designed to see every move before it happens.
So, order yourself a black coffee, settle into a comfortable chair, and prepare for a high-stakes standoff where human instinct goes toe-to-toe with modern technology.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Do I need to read the previous Jack Reacher books before reading Chain Reaction? Not at all! One of the greatest strengths of the Jack Reacher series is that almost every book functions as a standalone novel. While returning characters like Susan Turner bring a rewarding history for long-time fans, Lee and Andrew Child write each entry so new readers can dive straight into the action without feeling lost.
2. Is Susan Turner a major character in Chain Reaction? Yes! Brigadier General Susan Turner—whom fans will remember from Never Go Back—plays a significant role in this installment. Her professional background and sharp military mind create a great operational counterweight to Reacher’s rogue, off-the-grid instincts.
3. How does Chain Reaction compare to classic Lee Child solo novels? The co-authored books with Andrew Child tend to feature slightly more modern technological themes and faster narrative shifts. However, Chain Reaction carefully balances these contemporary plot elements with classic Reacher hallmarks: minimal gear, keen observation skills, sudden violent action, and high-stakes investigation.
4. What is the central setting and atmosphere of Chain Reaction? The novel is largely set against the stark, high-altitude expanse of rural Colorado. The contrast between remote, dusty blacktop roads, small-town roadside diners, and massive, state-of-the-art AI data centers creates an eerie, isolated atmosphere perfect for a modern thriller.
