Plot Summary – Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
Sonia Kincaid: I would make a great mother, don’t you think?
Michael Bryce: Oh my God, a child would be so lucky to have you as its host.
Sonia Kincaid: Thank you. It must be your powerful asexuality that makes you such a good listener.
Salma Hayek and Ryan Reynolds in Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
A sequel to the 2017 Action comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard, this seems a continuation of the same slapstick brand of comedy laced with guns and car chase filled action sequences. But if the original was thus, why would the sequel change the formula? And for once, I agree, that slapstick is required in our currently pandemic ravaged World. Any reason to laugh, smile or chortle with glee has become a rare commodity over the last one and a half years and no quick end to our tribulations are visible on the horizon. But I digress, let us come back to the satirical take on Global conspiracies and the mad rush to prevent one such conspiracy come to fruition!!
Ex-AAA rated Bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) takes a forced vacation to Capri, Italy when his still suspended license and investigations into losing his protectee, continue. But his vacation is short-lived as the glamorous Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) pinches him from his idyllic days to save her husband Darius (Samuel L. Jackson), who has been kidnapped by some mafioso. After the usual chaotic scenes, the trio land with the Interpol and their investigation of another over-the-top megalomaniac, Aristotle (Antonio Banderas). Aristotle is peeved at how Greece is treated by the EU and wants to make the whole of Europe pay for EU’s sins.
To meet his nefarious agenda, Aristotle plans to introduce malware into the Data Centers that serve Europe and cause large scale deaths, destruction and mayhem. Since the trio of no-gooders have proved to be the spanner in the works of Interpol, they are chosen to infiltrate Aristotle’s inner circle and ferret out the locations that he plans to target. Well, so much for the premise! There is Morgan Freeman in a cameo, and even in that short spell, he seems to own those sequences…
It is pointless to search for much logic or rationale in these movies, there isn’t much to find. But that is exactly the point, in the year gone by, entertainment for the masses have been in short supply. So, it is natural to be welcoming for all forms of it, even if it is something that you earlier disliked. Thus, this expletive laden, suspended belief movie wins a major chuckle at its inanity.
Conclusion – Movie Review of Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard
All three lead actors are good in the roles expected off them, and though some of the expletive-laden dialogs rankle even now!! The cinematography, particularly the lighting, is quite breathtaking in its beauty. the one-liners sharp and crackling with mirth. One wishes a slightly meatier role for Antonio Banderas as he’s mostly left as a fill-in the blanks type of character. The car chases are smartly done and other action sequences are all brilliantly choreographed. Though at times, Salma Hayek seems a bit loud, but then she pulls herself back almost immediately and some little nuance captivate us!
Just to get rid of the Pandemic induced depression and lethargy, this movie is a fun watch – a laugh a minute laugh riot!!
