Plot Summary – Bombshell

People don’t stop watching when there’s a conflict. They stop watching when there isn’t one.

Roger Ailes in Bombshell

Bombshell is based on a true scandal which took place in 2016 around Donald Trump’s election which happened at Fox News. The three leading ladies – Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron), Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) and Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie) make a stellar star cast and since the story is based on real-life events, it’s fascinating to watch.

I feel, the direction has let the movie down somewhat, because a powerhouse like Nicole Kidman is under utilized. Megyn interviews Donald Trump before the election and questions him on his misogynistic views, and lands right in the middle of a controversy. Political machinations both within her organization and without, makes her feel that she’s set the ball rolling on protests against sexual harassment at work and misogynistic comments from men in power.

Do you know why we dress soldiers the same? So everybody knows they’re replaceable.

Gretchen Carlson in Bombshell

Then, a former anchor of Fox, Gretchen, begins a protracted expose on FOX CEO Roger Ailes (John Lithgow) and his decades long sexual harassment of women working in FOX News. When she refuses Roger’s sexual advances, she’s removed as Anchor from a primetime show. Slowly, other journalists and producer Kayla also come forward with their own harassment stories at FOX in the hands of Roger Ailes.

Early on he realized for a network to stay on 24 hours a day you need something to hold an audience. That something is legs. There’s a reason for clear desks.

Megyn Kelly in Bombshell

Can these women bring down the powerful and well entrenched CEO? Put an end to the misery countless women endured at the hands of Roger, for decades? In the murky and dirty world of sexual harassment in the corporate world, can three women stand up and not be the victim anymore, and be heroes that they truly are??

If I learned anything this year, it’s to not get sucked into a fight with someone who has better reason to be in it than you do.

Megyn Kelly in Bombshell

Worth a watch, at times the story makes you cry out in frustration as women hold onto their jobs and keep quiet, but the bravado of the women who protest makes you cheer for them and pray that such actions should happen in all corporate offices (or any other field of life) and this evil ends once and for all…. But alas, that is UTOPIA!! Never to be but one can always hope!!

Conclusion – Bombshell Movie Review

As this is based on true events, the movie itself marks the public taking down of a media mogul of the stature of Roger Ailes, which in itself was a major news scandal. Coming at a time when the #metoo movement was gathering steam around the world, and the fractious tenure of Donald Trump at the helm of USA was raging, this film throws light on harassment at the workplace – irrespective of its size, grandeur and fame. Thereafter, a lot more issues have come out of a similar nature but unfortunately, the matter of harassment at the workplace hasn’t gone away, and isn’t likely too either, in the near future.

News is like a ship. You take your hands off the wheel and it pulls hard to the left.
